Nigerian actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod has publicly addressed ongoing rumors surrounding the alleged exchange of sexual favors for movie roles in the Nigerian film industry. Speaking during an interview on Rainbow Radio, Afod clarified that while some individuals may attempt to use their bodies as leverage, without genuine talent, such efforts are ultimately futile.
Afod stated unequivocally that talent remains the most important factor for success in Nollywood. He explained, “If a woman offers her body to secure a role without any acting ability, she is simply wasting her time. Producers will not cast someone who lacks the required skills, regardless of other circumstances.”
Reflecting on broader societal dynamics, the actor acknowledged that people often try to use what they have to achieve their goals, but stressed that merit cannot be replaced. “In every profession, from schools to hospitals to banks, people will make advances. It's up to the individual to consent or decline. But in this industry, talent will always speak louder than any other form of influence,” he said.
He went on to compare filmmaking to sports, where not every player makes the team: “If I’m a coach with 21 players and can only use 11, I will go for the best. Even if 14 are talented, I will still select based on merit. The same applies in acting—only those with real skill will succeed.”
Afod also encouraged aspiring filmmakers and actors to take initiative: “Let everyone find a way to fund and produce their own projects. That’s the Nigerian way. Anyone can create opportunities if they believe in their craft.”
In conclusion, Afod urged actors and actresses to focus on honing their skills rather than seeking shortcuts, reaffirming that talent, discipline, and determination remain the keys to long-term success in Nollywood.
