Police Commanders in Mining Areas to Be Reassigned if Unsuccessful in Tackling Illegal Mining, Says Minister Muntaka
The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has issued a directive for the immediate reassignment of all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in mining areas. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to combat the growing issue of illegal mining in the country.
In a recent statement, the minister disclosed that he has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to implement the directive without delay. "I have ordered the IGP to transfer all police commanders in mining areas and replace them with new officers. Any regional, divisional, and district police commanders currently serving in these regions will be replaced with immediate effect," he confirmed.
Minister Muntaka explained that the extended tenure of some officers in mining regions had not yielded significant results in addressing illegal mining activities. He emphasized that this shake-up was necessary to improve efforts to combat the illegal industry.
To ensure effective results, the newly assigned officers will be subject to a performance review after three months. "The new commanders will undergo a performance evaluation after three months. If they fail to make progress, they will also be reassigned," the minister stated. He assured that this approach will continue until tangible improvements are observed.
Under the revised policy, officers who are removed from their posts will be reassigned to non-mining regions, making way for fresh personnel to tackle the challenges posed by illegal mining.
