A profound wave of grief has swept across social media following the untimely death of Osarugbe, a 23-year-old Nigerian woman who passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025, at around 11:33 a.m. in Libya after battling a prolonged illness.
The heartbreaking story of Osarugbe was shared by anti-human trafficking advocate Yakubu Oyiza, who, along with her team, had been working relentlessly to raise funds for the young woman’s repatriation to Nigeria for proper medical treatment. Hospitals in Libya had refused to provide her with the necessary care, and despite their best efforts, Osarugbe tragically passed away before she could be flown back home.
Oyiza revealed that, although all arrangements for Osarugbe’s burial in Libya—including the necessary documentation, autopsy, and securing burial land—had been made at a cost of approximately ₦350,000, her family’s actions have added an additional layer of heartache. According to Oyiza, the family abandoned Osarugbe during her time of need. She alleged that when a rescue plan had been arranged and the family was contacted, they refused to travel to Kano to be with her.
“Since yesterday, after I called Osarugbe’s family to inform them of her passing, they haven’t bothered to call me back to inquire about the situation,” Oyiza posted on Facebook on Saturday, April 5. She also expressed her dismay over certain family members’ behavior, who, instead of mourning the loss, were already demanding Osarugbe’s belongings.
“We sent ₦350,000 for her burial expenses in Libya, but they are still asking for more. And to make matters worse, her family is calling us to claim her property. We haven't even laid her to rest, and they are already causing trouble,” Oyiza lamented.
This tragic situation has left Oyiza devastated, and she took the opportunity to shed light on the grim realities faced by many young Nigerian women who seek better opportunities abroad, only to find themselves in distressing circumstances.
"Many of these young girls who flee to Libya are often running from something. This is truly heartbreaking," she added.
