Former Oyo State Governor Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo Passes Away Ahead of 90th Birthday

Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, and renowned technocrat, has passed away just days before his 90th birthday. The announcement was made in a statement issued by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the Olunloyo family on Sunday.

The statement, titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home,” described Dr. Olunloyo as a revered individual whose legacy encompasses decades of service to Nigeria and humanity. "With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo… former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat," the family said.

Dr. Olunloyo, who held several prestigious titles, including the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, was also the pioneering Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and Kwara State Polytechnic. His exceptional contributions to education and public service left an indelible mark on the nation.

The family further expressed that his long-standing impact on Nigeria will remain a source of pride even as they mourn his loss. They have announced that plans are underway for a dignified burial, urging the public to respect the family's privacy during this period of grief.

In April 2024, rumors of Dr. Olunloyo’s death had surfaced online, which he personally refuted in an interview from his residence in Ibadan. "I’m still here, not yet gone," he had said at the time, expressing concerns over the spread of false death rumors. Reflecting on his life, he added, "My father died at 42, while my mother lived to 102. I’m 89. I’ve crossed the expected life age." Dr. Olunloyo also recalled a similar incident in 2022 when unverified reports falsely claimed he had passed away at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an injunction to prevent the agency from continuing to label him as a “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice.” This legal move comes after Ofori-Atta's image and personal details were publicly displayed on the OSP's official social media pages, despite earlier assurances made in a letter dated February 18, 2025. In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity.
