Ghana’s Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed deep concern over the rising number of trained health professionals seeking to leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad—a trend he describes as alarming and unsustainable.
Speaking at the National Policy Dialogue held in Accra on April 9, 2025, Mr. Akandoh disclosed that more than 66% of the country’s health workforce have indicated their intention to migrate. The two-day event, jointly organized by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, was themed: “Transforming Ghana’s Health Workforce for UHC: Align, Invest, and Sustain.”
“If this is not addressed urgently, it could undermine our entire effort to provide equitable healthcare across the country,” the Minister warned.
He attributed the migration trend to economic challenges, limited job opportunities, and substandard working conditions. Despite the government's efforts to expand training programs for health professionals, Mr. Akandoh emphasized that underemployment and the absence of long-term career incentives continue to drive many professionals to seek opportunities outside Ghana.
The Minister urged all stakeholders to prioritize a comprehensive review of existing workforce policies and to implement sustainable strategies that not only improve retention but also strengthen the national healthcare system.
