IGP Christian Yohuno Leads Strategic Mission to Bawku Following Deadly Clashes

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a high-level delegation to Bawku in the Upper East Region in response to a violent disturbance that resulted in the death of one civilian and injuries to several individuals, including security personnel.

According to an official statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on April 10, 2025, the IGP was accompanied by senior officers from the operations, investigations, and intelligence departments. The visit was aimed at assessing the security situation on the ground and gathering firsthand information following the April 9 clashes.

The Police Service confirmed that peace has been restored in Bawku through a coordinated effort with the Ghana Armed Forces. The incident reportedly involved confrontations between the Police and some youth from the area.

"Tragically, one individual, identified as Fuseini Iddrisu, lost his life during the confrontation," the statement revealed. "Five others—including a police officer and an immigration officer—sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical care."

The unrest also resulted in property damage. The statement noted that two police vehicles and a rented police residence in Binduri were vandalized, alongside homes belonging to several police officers.

The visit by the IGP, according to the release, was both operational and humanitarian. During the trip, Mr. Yohuno and his delegation extended condolences to the bereaved family, visited those injured in the violence, and provided support to officers who suffered property losses.

Reaffirming their dedication to restoring lasting peace, the Ghana Police Service emphasized its ongoing collaboration with all key stakeholders.

"We wish to assure the public that the Ghana Police Service remains committed to working alongside the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and other relevant partners to maintain law, order, and security in Bawku," the statement concluded.

The statement was signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs.

In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity. Additionally, Ofori-Atta seeks an interlocutory injunction to stop the OSP from issuing any further press releases or public statements that ...
