A tragic incident in Sokoban-Krofrom, near Kumasi in Ghana's Ashanti Region, has left a three-year-old girl in critical condition after she was accidentally shot in the face by her 11-year-old cousin.
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:54 p.m. on July 6, 2025. According to police reports, the boy—whose identity has been withheld due to his age—was handling a locally manufactured pistol when he unintentionally discharged the weapon, striking the young girl at close range.
Emergency services rushed the victim to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where she remains under medical care. A situational report from the Ashanti Central District Police confirms that the child is responding to treatment.
Authorities have instructed Angela Pokua, the mother of the juvenile suspect, to present her son to the police as part of ongoing investigations. Officials are working to determine the exact circumstances leading to the shooting.
As part of the inquiry, police have detained the household’s landlady, 64-year-old Regina Osei Boadi, and her 26-year-old son, Akwasi Kyeretwie Boadi. The weapon is believed to have been retrieved from a storeroom in the residence, though the young suspect was unable to identify its owner.
According to reports, the scene had been cleaned before police arrived. However, officers recovered the pistol along with six pellets. The firearm’s ownership and how it came to be accessible to the child remain under investigation.
The incident was first reported by Kingsley Kwadwo Appiah of Paraku Estate, Atasemanso-Kumasi, who received a distress call from his mother-in-law, Regina Osei Boadi. His daughter—the victim—had been living with Boadi following the death of her mother.
Police investigations are ongoing to establish how the minor gained access to the weapon and to identify those responsible for the firearm’s storage and security.
