Assembly Members across Ghana are now receiving a monthly allowance of GHC1,300, as part of a government initiative to enhance local governance and improve service delivery. The payments, covering the months of April and May 2025, were announced by the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Ahmed Ibrahim, during a press briefing in Accra on July 14, 2025.
According to the Minister, a total of GHC23.6 million has been disbursed to 9,085 Assembly Members nationwide. These funds were sourced from the Ministry’s 2025 budgetary allocation and are intended to strengthen the Assemblies’ capacity to monitor and supervise government projects within their jurisdictions.
“This initiative is designed to provide Assembly Members with the necessary financial and logistical support to ensure effective monitoring of all government projects and programmes in their electoral areas,” Mr. Ibrahim stated.
He also acknowledged persistent challenges with the centralization of resources, which have historically impeded the effective functioning of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
To address this, the government allocated GHC100 million to the Ministry in the 2025 national budget, of which GHC25 million was released in June to support logistics and other operational requirements at the local government level.
This development is seen as a significant step towards empowering local representatives and improving grassroots governance across the country.
