President Mahama Calls for National Unity, Accountability at Inaugural Day of Prayer

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to reject tribalism, religious extremism, and political division, warning that such forces threaten the nation’s unity, peace, and development.

Speaking at Ghana’s first official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, held on Tuesday, July 1 at the State House, President Mahama called on citizens to promote shared values and foster a culture of national cohesion.

“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, the voices of religious extremism, and the poison of political division,” he said. “These are seeds of discord that must never take root in our beloved country.”

The event brought together religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim communities, government officials, and members of the public to reflect, pray, and seek spiritual renewal for the nation.

Highlighting the importance of unity and peace, President Mahama stated, “We must speak a language of peace, compassion, and mutual respect. We must build bridges, not barriers—for we are one people, sharing one land, one identity, and one destiny.”

In a strong message on leadership and public accountability, the President emphasized that no one is above the law—not even the presidency.

“Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people,” he affirmed. “Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law.”

He encouraged citizens to hold public officials, including himself, to the highest standards of integrity, humility, and service.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving fulfills a campaign promise made by President Mahama and coincides with his commitment to restoring July 1—Republic Day—as a statutory public holiday. The day is intended to inspire national reflection, unity, and a renewed sense of civic responsibility.

This inaugural observance reflects the Mahama administration’s broader vision of charting a new path for Ghana—one rooted in healing, accountability, and shared purpose.

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an injunction to prevent the agency from continuing to label him as a “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice.” This legal move comes after Ofori-Atta's image and personal details were publicly displayed on the OSP's official social media pages, despite earlier assurances made in a letter dated February 18, 2025. In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity.
