United States President Donald Trump has suggested that he may consider deporting South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, following a growing political rift between the two.
During a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, Trump was asked whether he would consider deporting Musk. His response was cautious but pointed: “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look.”
The tensions stem from Musk’s vocal criticism of Trump’s flagship legislative proposal, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk has objected to provisions in the bill that reduce federal support for electric vehicles (EVs), a move that directly impacts his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.
Trump, who previously enjoyed Musk’s support and financial contributions during the 2024 presidential campaign, appeared frustrated by the billionaire's opposition. He hinted that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) might review Musk’s access to federal subsidies.
"We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon," Trump quipped, in a comment that was half-joking but carried a clear warning.
The president further accused Musk of being upset due to the potential loss of government incentives for EVs. “He’s losing his EV mandate. He’s very upset about things, but he could lose a lot more than that,” Trump stated.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump also implied that Musk’s business empire in the U.S. was heavily reliant on federal assistance. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” he wrote.
Musk, currently the world’s richest man, had served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency before stepping down in May. Once a close ally of Trump, Musk has since accused the president and the Republican Party of retreating from leadership on clean energy initiatives.
In response to the ongoing dispute and the proposed legislation, Musk has floated the idea of launching a new political party, tentatively named the “America Party,” should the bill pass into law.
The fallout between Trump and Musk marks a significant shift in their once-strong political and professional alliance.
