Professor Eric Abavare, President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has sharply criticized former President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as insincerity in tackling illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In an interview with Citi News, Prof. Abavare expressed strong concerns about Mahama's posture and actions on the issue, accusing him of inconsistency and possible duplicity.
"Mr. President, I hesitate to use the word 'conman,' but your recent actions strongly suggest otherwise,” Prof. Abavare stated. “The urgency and pragmatism you exhibited before the election are no longer evident.”
He further insinuated that political or personal interests might be influencing Mahama’s approach to the illegal mining crisis, suggesting that the former President’s affiliations with entities in the gold mining sector could be hindering decisive action.
“It raises concerns about vested interests. I don't want to believe it's because of GoldBod or other gold exploration and mining companies, but even if it is, that does not justify the harm being caused,” he added.
Illegal mining continues to be one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental and social challenges, with widespread calls for sustained and impartial action from political leaders.
