Eric Afful, a driver, has been remanded into custody by the Accra Circuit Court following his arrest for allegedly stealing a police vehicle. The stolen Toyota Hilux pick-up, valued at GH¢300,000, is registered to the Ghana Police Service.
Afful faces two charges: conspiracy to commit a crime and theft, under the Criminal Offences Act of 1960. His alleged accomplice, identified only as Acquah, remains at large.
According to Chief Inspector Amanie Abel, the prosecuting officer, the theft occurred on August 19, 2025. The vehicle, assigned to the Commander of the National Patrol Unit, had been parked outside his home in Ashaley Botwe. When the commander checked the next morning, the vehicle was missing. A formal complaint was lodged at the Lakeside Estates Police Station.
The following day, a police patrol team located the stolen vehicle, with Afful behind the wheel. A search of the vehicle revealed several incriminating items, including a police-issued driving logbook, the commander’s hospital ID card, and various Toyota ignition keys.
Initially, Afful claimed he had been instructed by a friend to use the vehicle to pick up a woman. However, he later confessed to stealing the vehicle in collaboration with Acquah.
Afful remains in custody as authorities continue their efforts to locate his accomplice. The case has been adjourned to a later date.
