Franklin Cudjoe, President of the policy think tank Imani Africa, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the upcoming Akwatia by-election. His call comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced its decision not to contest the Tamale Central seat, which became vacant following the tragic death of its Member of Parliament in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
Cudjoe praised the NPP’s move as a demonstration of national unity and appealed to the NDC to make a similar gesture in the interest of political harmony. “The NPP has decided not to contest the late Hon. Murtala’s seat. Good call. The NDC should do the same. They should not contest Akwatia,” Cudjoe stated in a Facebook post.
His statement has received significant public support, with many Ghanaians arguing that political restraint during this period of national mourning would help ease growing tensions across the country. Several commentators noted that such a move by the NDC would show genuine commitment to unity and national healing, especially following the loss of two cabinet ministers.
In response to the ongoing discussions, Rashid Tanko, Deputy Elections and IT Officer for the NDC, confirmed that the party is currently in a period of mourning and has temporarily suspended all activities related to the Akwatia by-election.
As the political climate remains sensitive, many observers are watching closely to see whether the NDC will heed the calls to step back from the by-election in a show of bipartisan solidarity.
