Emma Thompson Jokes She Could Have ‘Changed American History’ by Dating Donald Trump

Actress Emma Thompson recently joked about a surprising moment in her past—when Donald Trump once invited her out for dinner.

Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, the Love Actually and Nanny McPhee star recalled receiving a call from Trump while she was filming Primary Colors, a 1998 political satire loosely based on Bill Clinton’s campaign.

“The phone rang in my trailer, and it was Donald Trump,” she said. “He said, ‘I’d love for you to stay in one of my beautiful places, and maybe we could have dinner.’ I thought it was a prank!”

Thompson, then going through a divorce from actor Kenneth Branagh, added with a laugh:

“He must’ve had people finding newly divorced women to call. He got the number to my trailer—that’s stalking! I could’ve gone on a date with Donald Trump... I could’ve changed the course of American history!”

This isn’t the first time Thompson shared the story. Back in 2017, she told Swedish host Fredrik Skavlan that she politely declined, saying she’d “get back to him.” Skavlan quipped that she could have become First Lady and stopped him.

Though she never met Trump in person, Thompson has been married to actor Greg Wise since 2003, whom she met on the set of Sense and Sensibility.

Earlier this year, the 66-year-old made headlines at a London Q&A for her film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, where she playfully suggested sex should be prescribed by the NHS because “it’s so good for you.”
