Ghana’s government has taken a major step toward boosting digital literacy by partnering with global tech leaders Google and Huawei to train 200,000 young people in digital skills.
Speaking at the latest edition of the Government Accountability Series, Deputy Minister for Communications and Digital Innovation and Member of Parliament, Hon. Sam George, outlined progress made between January and July 2025 in advancing Ghana’s digital agenda under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
Hon. George reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to transparency, highlighting that these briefings are held quarterly to keep citizens informed. He also laid out four key strategic priorities guiding the Ministry’s work:
- Expanding access to affordable digital infrastructure
- Promoting inclusive digital skills development
- Strengthening regulatory and cybersecurity frameworks
- Supporting innovation and entrepreneurship
A key highlight was the announcement of Ghana’s collaboration with Google and Huawei under the "One Million Coders Program," with each company committed to training 100,000 individuals.
“These partnerships are a deliberate step toward equipping our youth with the skills needed to thrive in the digital economy,” said Hon. George.
He also shared a major policy achievement regarding internet affordability. As of July 1, 2025, reforms have led to reduced data costs across the country. Mobile network providers have introduced revised pricing models, offering greater data volumes for the same price.
“For example, MTN has increased data bundles by 15%, while Telecel and AT have rolled out 10% increases,” he noted.
These developments reflect the government’s broader strategy to foster digital inclusion and drive economic growth through technology.
