Gina Carano Reaches Settlement with Disney Over Mandalorian Firing

Actress and former MMA fighter Gina Carano has officially settled her lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, more than four years after she was fired from The Mandalorian, a Star Wars spin-off on Disney+.

Carano, who portrayed the character Cara Dune, was removed from the series in 2021 following a controversial social media post in which she compared the experience of being a Republican in the United States to that of being Jewish during the Holocaust. The post sparked widespread backlash, leading to her dismissal by Lucasfilm, which called her remarks “denigrating to people based on their cultural and religious identities.”

The details of the settlement have not been made public, but Carano shared the outcome on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I hope this brings some healing to the Force.” She described the agreement as the “best outcome for all parties involved,” and added that she is “excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter.”

Carano’s legal action accused Disney and Lucasfilm of wrongful termination and gender discrimination. She claimed that male co-stars who had made similarly controversial statements were not subject to the same disciplinary actions. Her lawsuit sought $75,000 in damages and requested that she be reinstated in The Mandalorian.

Elon Musk provided financial support for the lawsuit, a gesture Carano publicly acknowledged. “I’ve never met Elon Musk,” she wrote, “but he stepped in to do this Good Samaritan deed for me.” She concluded her post with a simple message: “Yes, I’m smiling.”

Following the settlement, Lucasfilm released a conciliatory statement expressing appreciation for Carano’s work and professionalism. “She was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff. She worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect,” the company said. It also expressed openness to exploring future opportunities for collaboration.

Carano has faced controversy in the past for publicly opposing mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic and for promoting unfounded claims of voter fraud related to the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
