Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has strongly dismissed assertions that his public criticisms of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) contributed to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) victory in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Pan African Television, Agyapong stated that such claims are baseless and unfair. According to him, the NDC’s electoral strategy relied more on statements made by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other government officials, rather than his personal critiques of the NPP.
“You saw the former Chief Justice picketing. I said during my campaign that anyone who lost their position in the administration in 2022 was affected by the public’s decision to remove us from office. Now some party members are going around blaming me for the party’s defeat,” Agyapong explained.
He questioned why his cautionary remarks were being singled out, especially when many of the NDC’s advertisements in the 2024 campaign highlighted controversial statements made by Dr. Bawumia.
“Did I say that when the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you? Did I say I locked the dollar and gave the key to the police? All those were their own words,” he said. “People were losing their businesses and making decisions based on their struggles, but now it’s convenient to blame me.”
Agyapong added that had the NPP taken his advice seriously, the party might have avoided what he described as its worst electoral defeat.
“All my comments were meant as a warning. If they had listened, we wouldn’t be facing this humiliation today. But the entire party machinery was against Kennedy Agyapong. They’ve never been fair to me, but I leave it to God,” he concluded.
The outspoken politician emphasized that internal denial and finger-pointing will not solve the party's challenges moving forward.
