At least three people have been confirmed dead and several others critically injured following a violent confrontation at Agona Abodom during this year’s Akwanbo Festival. The incident occurred in the Agona West Municipality of Ghana’s Central Region, a community that has only recently emerged from prolonged chieftaincy disputes.
According to eyewitness reports, chaos erupted when a rival faction allegedly hired land guards to disrupt the festival. The ensuing violence led to the destruction of two vehicles and extensive damage to property, including furniture at the chief’s palace.
Eyewitness Kwame Arhin, speaking to MyNewsGh correspondent Hajia Asana Gordon, confirmed the fatalities and injuries.
"Three people have lost their lives, and many others are in critical condition," Arhin reported.
The unrest has left residents living in fear, with many calling for urgent intervention by the police and military to restore peace and ensure safety.
Alex Donkor, the Assembly Member for the Agona Abodom Electoral Area, has appealed for immediate reinforcements.
"The situation is escalating rapidly. We urgently need more security personnel to maintain order and prevent further violence," Donkor stated.
Authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the incident.
