Regulating Prophecies Shouldn’t Be a Priority – Victoria Bright

 

Prominent lawyer and entrepreneur Victoria Bright has urged the government to shift its focus from regulating religious prophecies to addressing more pressing national issues.

Speaking in an interview with a private radio station on August 11, 2025, Ms. Bright acknowledged that some self-proclaimed prophets—both genuine and fraudulent—take advantage of vulnerable individuals. While she supports accountability for misleading religious figures, she questioned the appropriateness of presidential involvement in regulating prophecies.

“I do believe there are both quack and genuine prophets who influence the minds of vulnerable people, so some form of sanction is necessary. But regulating prophecies from the Presidency? There are far more urgent matters the government should be addressing,” she said. “I’m not aware of any country that officially regulates prophecies.”

Her comments follow a recent directive from the Presidency instructing religious leaders to submit “prophecies of national significance” for official review. According to the Office of Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, the initiative aims to evaluate spiritual warnings related to national leadership, security, governance, and public safety.

This move comes in the wake of viral videos circulating online, in which some Christian leaders claimed to have foreseen the recent military helicopter crash that killed eight individuals, including two ministers.

While Ms. Bright supports responsible religious practices, she emphasized that Ghana is grappling with more critical challenges that deserve the full attention of national leadership.
