Seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the armed hijacking of a 5,400-litre fuel tanker, following a coordinated police operation across the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on August 7, 2025. Officers stationed at the Ablekuma Borkorborkor checkpoint in Accra intercepted a green pickup truck transporting three men in its cargo area. As police approached the vehicle, two of the men suddenly leapt out and fled, shouting that they had been kidnapped by armed robbers who hijacked their tanker near Nsawam the night before.
The driver of the pickup truck quickly fled the scene, leaving behind the third man, who was apprehended by officers after a brief pursuit.
Further investigations confirmed that the two fleeing men were indeed fuel tanker drivers from Tema who had been abducted and handcuffed during the hijacking. The stolen tanker, with registration number GT 2493–20, had been forcefully seized by the suspects during the night.
Following this lead, police intelligence teams launched a follow-up operation, resulting in the arrest of six more suspects at Asikwa Junction, near Bunso in the Eastern Region.
At the scene, officers recovered the hijacked fuel tanker, another tanker with registration number GN 804–13, a fuel pumping machine believed to have been used to siphon the contents, and a Volkswagen Golf vehicle (GW 5185–Z) linked to the suspects.
All seven individuals are currently in police custody and are expected to face legal proceedings in the coming days. The recovered tankers and equipment have been secured as evidence while investigations continue.
The Ghana Police Service has commended the swift response and coordinated efforts of the officers involved, assuring the public that justice will be pursued diligently. The incident highlights the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and protect public safety.
