Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has voiced criticism of UEFA following its tribute to Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid, which made no mention of the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), al-Obeid, 41, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday while awaiting humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip. Revered as the "Pele of Palestinian football," he scored over 100 career goals, including two in 24 appearances for the Palestinian national team.
UEFA shared a tribute on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, stating:
"Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pele’. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times."
In response, Salah, 33, questioned the lack of context in the post:
"Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?"
As of now, UEFA has not issued a formal response. The BBC has reported reaching out for comment.
The situation in Gaza remains dire. The conflict intensified after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and over 250 people taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent military response has, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, led to more than 61,300 deaths to date.
The ministry also reported that within the last 24 hours alone, 38 people were killed and 491 injured amid ongoing Israeli military operations.
In addition, the United Nations recently revealed that 1,373 Palestinians have died since late May while attempting to access food, following the setup of new distribution centers by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a group backed by both the U.S. and Israeli governments.
Salah has previously used his platform to call for humanitarian access to Gaza and has appealed to world leaders to take action to prevent further casualties.
