Six people—four men and two women—have tragically died after an illegal mining pit, commonly referred to as a galamsey site, collapsed in Wassa Dunkwa, located in the Amenfi West Municipality of Ghana’s Western Region.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims were working underground when the pit’s unstable walls gave way, burying them under rubble. Fellow miners quickly launched a rescue mission and managed to retrieve the bodies, but unfortunately, all six were already deceased.
Footage from the scene, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the bodies covered in leaves and being transported to their families in an emotionally charged atmosphere. Heartbroken community members were seen mourning the devastating loss.
This incident adds to the rising death toll from illegal mining activities in Ghana. Despite continued government efforts and crackdowns, galamsey operations persist in many mining communities. Experts cite high unemployment and the lure of quick profits as key factors driving individuals to engage in such high-risk ventures.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the tragedy, but pressure is mounting on both local and national leaders to intensify enforcement and implement safer, more sustainable alternatives for livelihood in mining regions.
