Stephen Atubiga Breaks Down on Live TV Over Ongoing Bawku Conflict

In a deeply emotional appearance on UTV, monitored by MyNewsGh, Ghanaian politician Stephen Atubiga was moved to tears as he addressed the protracted and violent conflict in Bawku, a town in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

Visibly distressed, Atubiga expressed profound disappointment and sorrow over the persistent violence rooted in chieftaincy disputes. The conflict, he said, has become so disheartening that he now feels ashamed of his origins.

“If it were up to me, I would change my identity and adopt an Akan name,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion. “I’m deeply hurt by what is happening.”

Atubiga lamented the irony of a community already deprived of basic infrastructure further destroying itself through internal strife. “This fight is no longer worth it. There is nothing meaningful to gain from this violence,” he stated.

He decried the lack of progress in Bawku, noting that even the most basic amenities are missing, yet the community remains entangled in deadly disputes. “We’re fighting over nothing. There is nothing in Bawku that justifies the destruction we’re seeing,” he said.

The politician revealed that, out of compassion, he has been personally supporting affected families financially, but questioned how sustainable his efforts could be.

“I’ve been helping many families from Bawku with my own resources. But for how long can I continue? We’re trapped in poverty and backwardness—and it’s self-inflicted,” Atubiga concluded, overcome with emotion.
