Arsenal wrapped up their pre-season campaign in style with a convincing 3–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Emirates Stadium, highlighted by a debut goal from new signing Viktor Gyökeres.
The Swedish striker, signed from Sporting CP for £63 million this summer, opened the scoring in the first half. He connected with a pinpoint cross from Martin Zubimendi, powering a header past Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón.
Arsenal doubled their lead before halftime when Bukayo Saka capitalised on a defensive error following a miscommunication between Simón and his backline. The Gunners sealed the win late in the second half, as Kai Havertz made a surging run from midfield before calmly finishing to make it 3–0.
Gyökeres, who was substituted after 69 minutes, came close to adding a second goal with a diving header that struck the post. His debut performance was widely praised for his strength, intelligent movement, and early signs of chemistry with his new teammates.
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed satisfaction with the team's performance and the impact of his new striker as Arsenal look ahead to their Premier League opener against Manchester United next weekend.
“It was important to make a statement today, and I think we did that,” said 18-year-old midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly. “We’re in a good position and ready for the start of the Premier League.”
The match slowed in tempo during the final minutes, as is common in pre-season fixtures, but Arsenal’s unbeaten pre-season campaign leaves them well-prepared and confident ahead of the new season.
