In a bold statement ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed his belief that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should not have contested the seat. Asiedu Nketia was speaking to the people of Akwatia as they prepare for the elections to replace the late NPP MP, Ernest Kumi.
According to Asiedu Nketia, Akwatia would be better served by an MP from the incumbent NDC party, emphasizing that development in the constituency would be more easily facilitated if their representative were aligned with the ruling government. He argued that having an MP from the opposition would hinder progress, as the NPP is currently not in power.
“I believe the NPP should not have contested the Akwatia seat. They should have left it for us because we are the ones in government. With the majority in Parliament, we can deliver results and implement changes that the people of Akwatia deserve,” Asiedu Nketia stated.
The NDC Chairman further stressed that an MP from the NDC would be able to directly advocate for development and secure resources for the constituency. In contrast, an NPP MP, he claimed, would only serve as part of the opposition, contributing little to the development of the area.
Asiedu Nketia added, “You don’t deserve an opposition MP. You need someone who is in power, someone who can effectively advocate for change and bring about tangible improvements to your community. Akwatia deserves a representative who can get things done, and that person is Bernard Bediako of the NDC.”
The Akwatia by-election is scheduled for tomorrow, September 2, 2025, and will determine who will succeed the late Ernest Kumi as the Member of Parliament for the constituency.
