Dr. Theophilus Acheampong, Vice President of Imani Africa and a renowned policy analyst, has strongly criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its premature focus on succession planning rather than governance. Acheampong’s remarks come in the wake of increasing discussions within the party about who will succeed John Dramani Mahama, less than a year into his second term as president.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Acheampong expressed concern that the NDC is diverting attention away from its responsibilities and the promises it made to the Ghanaian people. He emphasized that the focus should not be on who will be the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections, but on delivering tangible results that will earn the party the public's trust.
He stated, "Reality check: The Mahama 2.0 administration has been in office for less than a year. The priority should be on fulfilling significant manifesto promises such as tackling illegal mining (galamsey), improving 24-hour electricity (24HE), and executing the 'Big Push' infrastructure agenda. It is too early for discussions around succession."
Acheampong argued that any political figure or party member who ignores the importance of governance and performance, in favor of internal power struggles, has not learned the lessons from the 2016 and 2024 elections. He concluded by calling for less politicking and more tangible progress. "No delivery, no victory," he asserted, underlining the vital connection between governance performance and electoral success.
His comments reflect a broader concern about the direction of the NDC as it navigates its post-election strategy. Many in the party, however, continue to engage in speculative discussions regarding leadership, a sign of the uncertainty that often accompanies political transition periods.
As Ghana looks toward its next elections, Dr. Acheampong's call for a focus on governance could serve as a pivotal point in shaping the NDC’s political future. The effectiveness of the Mahama administration, especially in addressing the core issues of development and economic growth, will likely determine whether the party can rally public support in the years to come.
