Judge Denies Bail to NPP's Abronye DC, Cites Orwell’s Animal Farm

 

Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, and the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been denied bail by an Accra Circuit Court, sparking widespread public and legal debate.

On Friday, September 12, 2025, Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah adjourned the case to September 19, following his decision to reject the bail request. Abronye DC is facing two misdemeanor charges, but the court’s rationale went beyond the classification of the alleged offences.

In delivering his ruling, Judge Acquah drew an unexpected literary reference, quoting George Orwell’s allegorical novel Animal Farm. He used the novel’s central theme — the contradiction between equality in theory and inequality in practice — to justify his decision.

“The accused is facing two charges of misdemeanour. However, in this case, the court is not considering just the charges but also the significance of the accused’s words, which could compromise national security,” the judge stated.

He continued: “It is always said that all persons are equal, but in practice, it is not so. Courtesy of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one of the commandments says, ‘All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.’ In this case, all men are equal, but some are more equal than others.”

The judge’s unusual use of a literary work in a legal decision has drawn mixed reactions from legal experts and the general public. Some critics argue that such references may undermine the legal basis of the ruling, while others believe it underscores the broader societal context in which the court operates.

Abronye DC was arrested on Monday, September 8, and has since been held in police custody. Prosecutors requested additional time to continue investigations, leading to his remand.

His defense team argued that the charges were minor and that he posed no flight risk, making him a suitable candidate for bail. Nonetheless, the court remained unconvinced.

The case has attracted national attention, not only because of Abronye’s prominent political role but also due to the judicial reasoning used in denying his bail — which has now become a trending topic across both legal and political circles.
