The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a stern warning that it will pursue legal action against district assemblies permitting the installation of billboards on road medians. This announcement follows a recent cleanup operation in the Ayawaso West Municipality, where several illegal structures were dismantled. The NRSA asserts that these billboards obstruct drivers' visibility, thereby increasing the risk of accidents and endangering pedestrians.
Abraham Amaliba, the Acting Director-General of the NRSA, emphasized that despite multiple notices to local assemblies, no action had been taken to remove the billboards. This inaction has prompted the Authority to intervene directly. Amaliba further explained that advertisers would be required to pay administrative fees to reclaim their billboards, with any unclaimed signs set to be auctioned off.
“We have been informed by advertisers that local assemblies are allowing these billboards to be installed. Any assembly found to be facilitating the erection of such structures will face legal action for engaging in unlawful activities," Amaliba stated.
He added, "We have issued several notices requesting the removal of these billboards. Since the assemblies have failed to comply, we have taken it upon ourselves to remove them. Once the billboards are removed, we will notify the owners to come forward, pay the administrative fees, and reclaim their property. If the owners do not respond to our notices, we will proceed to auction the billboards to recover the costs incurred.”
This action by the NRSA underscores the Authority's commitment to ensuring road safety and the removal of hazards that could compromise public safety.
