The Accra Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the violent clashes that marred this year's Homowo Festival in Sowutuom and Anyaa on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
According to reports, tensions erupted during the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi when supporters of two rival chiefs clashed. The disagreement quickly escalated into gunfire, throwing the festival grounds into chaos.
Three individuals were tragically killed in the violence, including Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, known as Nii Kwashiebu; Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan; and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo. Four others—Enoch Amevor, Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey (also known as Nii Obrafour)—sustained injuries and were rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. In response to the incident, additional police personnel have been deployed to restore peace in the affected communities. Police are also conducting intelligence-led operations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, urged traditional leaders, elders, and their supporters to comply with established security arrangements and avoid actions that could further jeopardize public peace.
The Homowo Festival, traditionally a celebration of the Ga people's triumph over famine, was overshadowed by the violence this year. Security agencies continue to work diligently to prevent further unrest and ensure the safety of all citizens.
In a related incident, two fatalities were also reported in Teshie during this year’s Homowo celebrations.
The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities pledging to hold those responsible accountable.
