Prof. Ransford Gyampo, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), has led Ghana’s delegation to the 11th Session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC-11) held in London from September 8–12, 2025.
The CCC is a technical arm of the IMO responsible for evaluating global safety codes and guidelines related to the carriage of bulk cargoes, dangerous goods, liquefied gases, and containers. Its work also covers inspection protocols and safety standards for new maritime fuels.
This year’s session focused on growing concerns about the rising number of containers lost at sea—a pressing issue with wide-ranging impacts on global supply chains, marine ecosystems, and port operations.
Key items on the agenda included:
- Revisions to the IMSBC Code
- Updates to cargo securing manuals
- Development of guidelines for emerging alternative fuels, such as ammonia and hydrogen
- Stronger inspection regimes and standardized securing equipment
Ghana’s delegation, including Ms. Sylvia Asana Dauda Owu, Capt. Derrick Attachie, and Ms. Lydia Tsotsoo Odai-Tettey, actively participated in the discussions. Prof. Gyampo emphasized the importance of aligning Ghana’s maritime safety practices with international standards to boost trade competitiveness and operational safety.

The CCC’s recommendations from the session will be forwarded to the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee for final review and adoption.
