A growing conflict between MultiChoice Ghana and the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations has reached a boiling point following a strong response from Minister Samuel Nartey George.
In a statement issued on September 5, 2025, MultiChoice Ghana acknowledged ongoing discussions with the Ministry to resolve the issue of DStv pricing. However, the company made it clear that it has not agreed to any price reductions. The statement emphasized that the primary goal of the discussions is to balance consumer concerns with the long-term viability of the DStv service, and reiterated the company's willingness to engage in the Ministry’s designated working committee.
Minister Samuel Nartey George, however, strongly criticized the pay-TV giant, accusing them of disrespecting the people of Ghana and failing to follow through on previous commitments to negotiate lower prices.
"I want to make it very clear," the Minister stated. "I will not continue to tolerate this disrespect from DStv. If MultiChoice is not serious about negotiating price reductions, as they previously promised, we will move forward with the shutdown as announced."
Minister George further revealed that MultiChoice had initially requested the Ministry to delay enforcement actions and expressed an openness to discuss the pricing issue. However, he warned that if the company has changed its position, the National Communications Authority (NCA) would proceed with regulatory enforcement.
“No company is above the law,” he affirmed. “When MultiChoice is ready to negotiate a fair price reduction, they can come to the table. Until then, there is nothing left to discuss. Ghana is open to businesses that respect our laws and institutions."
The dispute highlights tensions over the affordability of DStv services in Ghana and the Ministry’s stance on ensuring fair pricing for consumers. As of now, the resolution remains uncertain, and all eyes are on the next steps to be taken by both the Ministry and MultiChoice Ghana.
