A violent confrontation between residents of Mpatuam and military personnel in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region has resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a local Assembly Member.
The clashes, which occurred over the course of Monday and Tuesday, have left the community in shock and heightened tensions in the area. While the exact cause of the unrest remains unclear, initial accounts suggest that the violence erupted when military officers attempted to prevent residents from accessing a mining concession reportedly owned by Asanko Gold.
Sekyi Michael, the Assembly Member for the Mpatuam West Electoral Area, confirmed that one individual lost their life during Monday’s altercation. He further disclosed that military personnel returned to the community on Tuesday, sparking another round of violence. The second fatality, he said, was also an Assembly Member.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the military or local authorities regarding the incident.
The situation continues to evolve, and residents are calling for transparency and accountability as investigations unfold.
