World-Renowned Primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall Dies at 91


 

Dr. Jane Goodall, the globally respected primatologist, ethologist, and conservationist, has passed away at the age of 91. Her death was announced via a statement posted to her official Instagram account on October 1, 2025.

According to the statement, Dr. Goodall died of natural causes while in California, United States, as part of her ongoing speaking tour.

"The Jane Goodall Institute has learned this morning, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, has passed away due to natural causes. She was in California as part of her speaking tour in the United States."

Dr. Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England. Her groundbreaking research on the social and familial behaviors of wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, revolutionized the field of primatology and changed how humans view our closest animal relatives.

Beyond her scientific work, she was an unwavering advocate for wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. Through the Jane Goodall Institute, founded in 1977, and her global youth initiative, Roots & Shoots, she inspired generations to take action for the planet and its inhabitants.

In recognition of her lifelong dedication, Dr. Goodall was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) and served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy—grounded in science, compassion, and hope—will continue to influence and inspire the world for generations to come.
