Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has commenced a crucial phase of his “Our Journey Together” campaign with a regional tour of the Central Region, a key area expected to play a significant role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 flagbearer contest.
After completing a tour of the Volta Region over the weekend, Dr Bawumia began his Central Regional engagements on Monday, November 17, 2025, starting with the Awutu Senya East Constituency. He is also set to visit Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, and Effutu, marking the beginning of a broader tour covering all 23 constituencies in the region.
The Central Region holds strategic importance for his campaign, particularly as it is the home base of one of his strongest contenders, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central. Their competition is expected to heighten attention as the party inches closer to its internal primaries.
The NPP’s flagbearer election is scheduled for January 31, 2026, with five aspirants officially in the race:
- Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
- Kennedy Ohene Agyapong
- Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, former NPP General Secretary
- Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi
- Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe
Dr Bawumia’s tour aims to consolidate his support base in a region noted for influencing internal party outcomes. Campaign strategists emphasise that delegates in the Central Region are expected to play a decisive role in determining the party’s next leader.
His engagements focus on strengthening ties with delegates, grassroots organisers, and opinion leaders, while reinforcing his campaign themes of party renewal, unity, and forward-thinking leadership ahead of the crucial January primary.
