Police Detain Man Seen Assaulting Wife in Viral Video

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man captured in a viral Facebook video physically assaulting a woman believed to be his wife at their residence in Ofankor, located in the Ga East Municipality.

The disturbing footage, widely shared online, shows the woman attempting to shield herself from repeated attacks while shocked neighbours looked on.

According to a police statement, the suspect, John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the family home. Police noted that the arrest was conducted calmly but with urgency due to the seriousness of the assault and the national outcry that followed the video’s circulation.

The statement further revealed that two of Lamptey’s siblings—Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey—were also taken into custody after they allegedly confronted a female tenant they believed had recorded and shared the video. Police removed the tenant from the scene and placed her under protection to ensure her safety.

By the time officers arrived, the assaulted woman had already fled the residence. Police say locating her is now a top priority, emphasising that her safety and wellbeing are of immediate concern.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that offenders face the full consequences of their actions.

The incident has intensified discussions within the community about the need to intervene and speak out when signs of abuse surface. Residents say they hope the swift arrest will offer some reassurance to the victim and send a strong message that domestic violence will not be tolerated.
