Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the Ghana Health Information Management System (GHIMS) is now operational at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), marking the start of a government-owned digital patient records system.
The minister made the announcement during a working visit to the hospital, where he toured key departments and engaged with management and staff.
He explained that the rollout is part of the government’s strategy to establish a secure, state-owned electronic health information platform capable of protecting patient data and improving service efficiency. Mr. Akandoh noted that recent disruptions to the country’s electronic health systems have highlighted the need for the government to maintain full ownership of both the software and hardware underpinning medical record management.
By doing so, he said, the system will remain stable, offer better protection for patient information, and allow smooth integration with future service providers.
Mr. Akandoh also emphasized professionalism within the health sector, urging healthcare workers to treat all patients with respect and dignity. He reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing working conditions across health facilities.
While acknowledging that ongoing reforms may bring transitional challenges, the minister stressed that these changes are essential for achieving equitable deployment of health workers and improving healthcare delivery nationwide.
He called for constructive dialogue, unity of purpose, and a shared commitment to delivering high-quality care to the Ghanaian public.
