The Kwahu Traditional Council has dismissed claims that the Paramount Queenmother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III, was abducted during a security operation at the Abene Palace. The Council described the widely circulated reports as false and misleading.
According to the Council, the security operation was carried out in compliance with an interlocutory injunction issued on June 24, 2024, by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs. The injunction, granted in favour of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, barred Baffour Osei Akoto—who has been contesting the title of Kwahuhene—the Queenmother, and others from interfering with the functions of the legitimate chief at the palace.
Following the court order, the Ghana Police Service moved to the palace to maintain order and prevent potential disturbances.
The Council clarified that the Queenmother does not reside at the Abene Palace, contrary to claims that she had been taken from the premises. “No abduction has taken place,” the statement emphasized, adding that individuals detained during the operation were in good health and in lawful custody.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has ordered the immediate release of Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III after an operation conducted by some officers at the palace early on Monday, November 17. He also directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the incident and sanction any officers found culpable.
Reports indicate that the Paramount Chief’s Palace at Abene was attacked around 4 a.m. by armed men dressed in police uniforms who claimed to be from National Security. Residents reported hearing gunshots inside the palace before the alleged abduction of the Queenmother, who was present at the time.
Security has since been intensified across Kwahu to safeguard residents and visitors.
