GAF Recruitment Stampede: 3 Victims Discharged from ICU, 16 Still Hospitalized

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has provided an update on the victims of the stampede that occurred last Wednesday at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a military recruitment exercise. The latest report indicates that there has been notable improvement in the condition of several critically injured individuals.

The tragic incident, which has claimed the lives of six people, left many others injured as thousands of young Ghanaians rushed to the stadium for the recruitment process.

Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the Acting Director-General of GAF’s Department of Public Relations, shared the latest details during an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, November 17. She confirmed that three of the five individuals initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have shown significant recovery and have since been moved to a regular ward.

“Out of the five people who were in the ICU on the day of the incident, three are doing well and have been transferred to another ward,” Captain Arhin said. “We are optimistic that the remaining patients will continue to improve with the ongoing care.”

A total of 29 victims were admitted to the hospital on the day of the stampede. While some have been treated and discharged, 16 individuals remain hospitalized and continue to receive medical care.

“The injured are receiving the best care possible. While some have been discharged, 16 people are still receiving treatment and are under continuous monitoring,” Captain Arhin added. “We are doing everything we can to prevent further loss of life, and we remain hopeful for the recovery of all those affected.”

To alleviate the financial burden on the victims' families, Captain Arhin confirmed that the 37 Military Hospital will cover the full medical costs for all those injured in the stampede, with support from the government.

“The 37 Military Hospital will cover the entire medical expenses for anyone involved in the stampede, with assistance from the government,” she said.

The stampede occurred on Wednesday, November 12, as an overwhelming crowd gathered at the El-Wak Sports Stadium for the military recruitment exercise. The intense pushing and chaos at the entry points led to multiple injuries and tragic fatalities.
