The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced the arrest of a 21-year-old man accused of stabbing a firefighter during an operation to control a late-night fire at Adjiriganor in Accra.
The suspect, identified as Azumah Sampson, was detained after several days of searching and has since been handed over to the police. Authorities say he is assisting with ongoing investigations.
According to the GNFS, the incident occurred when Sampson allegedly attempted to force his way into the burning building to steal items while firefighters were working to contain the blaze. During the confrontation, he reportedly stabbed one firefighter in the left arm. Another firefighter sustained injuries when part of the building collapsed, causing a block to fall on his shoulder.
Service officials condemned the attack, describing it as alarming and unacceptable—especially at a time when emergency personnel were focused on saving lives and protecting property.
“Our primary goal is to keep people safe. It is heartbreaking when anyone attempts to harm those who are risking their lives to help,” an official stated.
The fire, which started around 9:30 p.m., destroyed seven of the eight rooms on the upper floor of the one-storey building. Fire crews from Legon, Madina, Adenta, and the Service’s headquarters worked for hours to bring the flames under control and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
The injured firefighters were treated at Unity Clinic in Madina and later discharged.
The GNFS had earlier offered a reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. It has not yet been confirmed whether the arrest resulted from a tip-off, but officials expressed relief that the suspect is now in custody.
