President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Bank of Ghana to intensify its efforts in educating Ghanaians on the importance of using the cedi for all domestic transactions. He emphasized that this practice is essential for strengthening the country’s economy and safeguarding the national currency.
Speaking at the *Cedi@60 International Currency Conference* in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, President Mahama stated that using the cedi in local transactions reduces exposure to exchange rate risks and contributes to long-term economic stability.
He further explained that Ghana, like many other nations, is navigating a period in which traditional monetary policies are being challenged globally. In such times, trust in institutions becomes as crucial as technical expertise. This places a significant responsibility on central banks to maintain public confidence in the currency.
While acknowledging the progress made, President Mahama stressed that sustaining economic stability requires ongoing public education and responsible currency practices. He urged the Bank of Ghana to expand its national educational campaigns in three key areas:
1. **Promoting the use of the cedi** in all domestic transactions to reinforce economic stability.
2. **Improving currency handling practices** to reduce printing costs and protect the integrity of banknotes.
3. **Enhancing financial literacy** to empower citizens to prevent fraud, demand accountability, and contribute to a healthy financial system.
President Mahama emphasized that public education efforts must reach all corners of the country, including schools, markets, transport unions, digital platforms, and rural communities.
Additionally, he urged stakeholders to pay close attention to the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), which he described as critical for facilitating trade among African businesses using their local currencies under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
