The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has undertaken a major operation to disrupt illegal mining activities in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The enforcement exercise, carried out on November 17, 2025, followed intelligence reports that several active galamsey sites were posing significant risks to the environment and to surrounding communities.
The task force moved into the affected areas at Anyankyirem, a concession legally owned by Ashanti Gold Corporation, but which had reportedly been taken over by illegal miners operating without adherence to safety standards or environmental regulations.
The operation also extended to areas near the Obuasi Airport, where similar unlawful mining activities had been detected.
During the raid, officers seized several items believed to support the illegal operations, including motorbikes, vehicles, and water pumps. Makeshift shelters and improvised mining tools were destroyed to prevent illegal miners from reestablishing their activities.
Many miners fled upon noticing the arrival of the security team, abandoning their equipment. One individual, suspected to be a key organiser, was arrested and is currently assisting police with investigations that may lead to prosecution.
A member of the task force described the operation as a critical step towards restoring lawful and environmentally responsible mining practices in the region.
The exercise has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of illegal mining and the need for strong collaboration between communities, traditional authorities, and law enforcement agencies to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources.
