Akim Swedru MP Questions the Need for Presidential Term Extension

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region, has raised concerns about the proposed extension of the presidential term in Ghana.

In a social media post, Nyarko Osei argued that a president does not need a longer tenure to bring about change or deliver results for the country. He pointed to the example of the United States, where presidents have served four-year terms for over 200 years while still advancing their democracy.

He said, "When a man is greedy and can’t function outside governmental power, a term of 10 years won’t satisfy him. How did America develop its democracy using the undeviating 4-year term for the past 200 years?"

This comment comes after the constitutional amendment committee recommended extending Ghana’s presidential term to five years. Nyarko Osei strongly disagreed with this proposal, asserting that poor leadership stems from lawbreaking, not the length of time in power.

Political analysts have also rejected the proposed change, arguing that a four-year term remains the most suitable for Ghana’s democratic development.
