AFCON: Davido Reacts After Losing ₦495 Million Bet Following Super Eagles’ Semi-Final Defeat

Award-winning Afrobeats singer Davido has reacted publicly after losing a reported ₦495 million (approximately $348,000) following Nigeria’s defeat at the semi-final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Super Eagles were eliminated after a tense semi-final clash against host nation Morocco ended goalless after regulation time and extra time. Morocco eventually secured a 4–2 victory in the penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou playing a decisive role in the win.

Prior to the match, Davido had revealed that he placed a $50,000 bet on Nigeria to reach the final, anticipating a potential payout of $348,000. Sharing his betting slip online, the singer had expressed strong confidence in the Super Eagles, stating that he would double his stake if Nigeria advanced.

However, the anticipated victory did not materialize, resulting in the loss of the wager. Following the match, Davido broke his silence by sharing a photo of himself relaxing over a meal of grilled fish before departing Morocco, a post that many interpreted as a calm response to the significant loss.

The development sparked mixed reactions online, with social media users offering a range of opinions—some criticizing the amount wagered, others downplaying the loss, and a few suggesting the bet was part of a promotional arrangement.

Despite the defeat, the Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign was widely praised for its intensity and resilience, even as Davido’s high-profile bet reignited conversations about celebrity gambling and financial influence.
