The long-awaited Bawku Mediation Report is set to be presented to President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the Jubilee House.
The presentation will convene key national stakeholders who have played vital roles in the ongoing efforts to restore peace in the conflict-affected Bawku area. Invitations have been extended to the National House of Chiefs, the Peace Council, the Christian Council, the Office of the National Chief Imam, the Catholic Secretariat, representatives of the UNDP, the British High Commission, regional ministers, and the National Security Coordinator.
Their presence reflects the country’s deep commitment to securing a lasting resolution for the people of Bawku.
Sources close to the process indicate that the submission of the report marks a significant milestone in the mediation efforts led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The Bawku conflict stems from a long-standing chieftaincy and ethnic dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.
Over the decades, several committees and government-led interventions have attempted to resolve the crisis, beginning with the Opoku Afari Committee in 1957, whose ruling in favour of the Kusasi was later upheld by the courts. Nevertheless, tensions have persisted.
Successive administrations have also sought to restore calm. Notably, former President John Kufuor initiated interventions in 2008, followed by additional mediation and security measures under then–Vice President Mahama in 2009. Community-driven initiatives, including the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee established in 2009, contributed to nearly a decade of relative stability until violence resurfaced around the 2020 elections.
In recent years, the Asantehene has taken a leading role in renewed mediation efforts, facilitating dialogue between representatives of both factions at the Manhyia Palace. These sessions concluded on December 1, paving the way for the final report to be submitted to the President.
The upcoming presentation is expected to shape the next phase of national efforts toward achieving lasting peace in Bawku.
