Bruno Fernandes Hails Ruben Amorim’s Discipline and Influence at Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has shared insights into his professional relationship with head coach Ruben Amorim, describing the manager as highly disciplined and “very serious at work,” while emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and clearly defined boundaries within the team.

Following Amorim’s appointment to replace Erik ten Hag, Fernandes has been repositioned into a deeper midfield role. Although this tactical change has altered his on-field responsibilities, it has not diminished his impact. The Portuguese midfielder has contributed five goals and seven assists in 16 Premier League matches, reaffirming his key role in the squad.

Adjusted role, sustained influence

Amorim’s tactical philosophy focuses on structure, balance, and control. As a result, Fernandes now operates closer to the base of midfield, helping to dictate play and manage the team’s tempo. While his presence in advanced attacking zones has reduced, he continues to serve as United’s main creative outlet.

Despite no longer featuring as a traditional attacking midfielder, Fernandes remains among the league’s top performers, with only Bryan Mbeumo scoring more Premier League goals this season.

Respect and boundaries

In an interview with Canal 11, Fernandes explained that his relationship with Amorim is rooted in professionalism and discipline.

“We set boundaries so that nothing goes too far,” he said. “If I have something to say, I prefer not to do it in front of the other players. He is very serious at work, and so am I.”

Fernandes also noted that Amorim is committed to building trust within the squad by connecting with players individually rather than relying solely on authority.

Transfer speculation and commitment

The United captain revealed that the club was open to his sale during the summer transfer window, with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal reportedly willing to submit a £100 million offer. He admitted that the situation was emotionally difficult, as it seemed the club would have allowed him to leave if he had pursued the move.

Ultimately, Fernandes credited Amorim’s confidence in him as the decisive factor behind his decision to remain at Old Trafford.

“My discussion with the manager is what made me stay,” he said. “From the club’s perspective, it felt like my departure wouldn’t have been a major issue, and that was painful.”

Choosing loyalty over money

While acknowledging the financial appeal of a move abroad, Fernandes stressed that financial gain has never dictated his career choices. He reiterated his loyalty to Manchester United and his commitment to giving everything for the club.

“I could have left and earned much more,” he said, “but loyalty doesn’t seem to mean the same thing anymore. I never felt I could act differently.”

Fernandes’ current contract runs until 2027, with an option for an additional year. He has indicated that any significant decision regarding his future may come after the 2026 World Cup, where he expects to represent Portugal.
