Agya Koo Explains Why He Walked Off the Set of Okomfo Anokye

Award-winning Ghanaian actor Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, has revealed why he refused to film a controversial scene in the highly anticipated movie Okomfo Anokye. The veteran Kumawood star, who has featured in over 100 films, shared the details during a recent interview with Angel FM, which quickly went viral on social media.

Agya Koo explained that the film’s director requested he perform a scene depicting his character bathing while young girls observed him, without any clothing. “The director told me to shoot the scene naked because that’s how Okomfo Anokye did it,” he said. “I told him that there weren’t any cameras during Okomfo Anokye’s time, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to appear naked on screen for a wide audience.”

The actor added that, in an effort to ensure historical accuracy, he suggested that the production team consult elders at the Manhyia Palace to verify the story. When his recommendation was ignored, he visited the palace personally, where the elders confirmed that such a depiction would be inappropriate. Despite this guidance, the director insisted on filming the scene as planned. “They told me that if I refused to shoot, the movie would not continue,” Agya Koo recounted, explaining why he ultimately walked off the set.

Social media reactions have largely praised the actor’s decision, with many users calling him a “legend” and commending him for upholding his principles, while highlighting the potential negative impact of the scene if it had been filmed.

In the interview, Agya Koo also reflected on his professional relationships with filmmakers and emphasized his commitment to making films authentic and historically credible for future generations.

Earlier coverage of Agya Koo has highlighted his rise to fame, including his collaborations with fellow comedians Santo and Abusuapanin Judas, as well as his humble beginnings as a shoemaker in Accra.

Agya Koo’s candid reflections continue to resonate with fans, underscoring his dedication to personal and professional integrity within the Ghanaian film industry.
