Solar Installation Accident Leaves Roof Damaged and Installer Falling Into Toilet

A solar panel installation in Nigeria took an unexpected turn after an installer accidentally broke a client’s roof and fell into the toilet below. The incident, which was recorded on video and shared on TikTok by @solidelectricalcompany, has since gone viral and generated widespread discussion online.

What went wrong

The installer explained that the accident occurred during the installation of monofacial solar panels. While working on the rooftop, his apprentice mistakenly stepped on the wrong area. Instead of walking along the wooden supports beneath the asbestos roofing sheets, he placed his weight on the center of the slate, which could not bear the load.

The roofing sheet collapsed instantly, causing the apprentice to fall through the ceiling and land inside the apartment’s toilet.

No injuries reported

Despite the dramatic nature of the fall, no serious injuries were recorded. The video clearly shows the section of the roof that gave way during the installation.

Responsibility and repairs

Following the incident, the apprentice reportedly took responsibility for the damage and purchased a new roofing sheet to replace the broken one.

Reactions from installers

Many Nigerian solar installers who reacted to the video noted that roof-related accidents are a common risk in the line of work. They stressed the importance of proper training, cautious movement on rooftops, and assessing the structural strength of roofs before beginning installations.

Concerns over mounting technique

The footage also revealed that the solar panels were installed directly onto the roof without mounting racks to allow airflow. Experts warn that this practice can lead to heat buildup, which may reduce panel efficiency and cause long-term damage to both the roof and the solar equipment.

The incident has renewed conversations about safety practices and installation standards within the solar energy industry.
