Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has strongly refuted claims suggesting that she played a role in facilitating the arrest of the Kwahu Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyemtua III. The Minister dismissed these allegations as false and misleading.
The statement comes in response to a report by Agoo 96.9 FM, which featured a video of Nana Nilm Sarpong, the Abene Bamuhene, who claimed that the Minister had confirmed authorizing the arrest.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Minister Awatey described the allegation as a "misrepresentation of facts" and an unfounded accusation. She clarified that on December 1, 2025, a delegation of Kwahu chiefs visited the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council to update her on the actions taken following the Queen Mother's arrest. During the meeting, the chiefs informed her that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), C.O.P. Christian Tetteh Yahuna, had expressed regret over the incident. The IGP reportedly acknowledged that the arrest was carried out by police officers and had ordered an investigation into the actions of the personnel involved.
The Minister further explained that while she did not sanction the arrest, she did apologize to the chiefs in her capacity as Regional Minister and head of the Regional Security Council. “Never in my submissions did I categorically say that I ordered the arrest of the Obahemaa,” she emphasized. "I take responsibility not because I sanctioned it, but because I am in charge of those who were supposed to have acted better."
Minister Awatey also pointed out that her acceptance of responsibility aligns with the IGP’s position, who, according to the chiefs, regretted the misconduct of the officers involved.
Expressing concern over the distortion of facts, she urged the public to disregard any misleading reports aimed at damaging her reputation and that of the Regional Security Council. She reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region, emphasizing that the council remains neutral in the ongoing dispute.
“I call on everyone to disregard the unfortunate reportage aimed at tarnishing my reputation and that of the Regional Security Council,” she said. “We do not associate with any of the disputing parties. My focus is on resolving the situation and ensuring stability in the Eastern Region.”
