The latest pricing adjustments from Ghana's National Petroleum Authority (NPA) have delivered a mixed bag for consumers, with petrol and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices heading south while diesel takes an upward turn in the second pricing window of August.
According to the NPA's newly released price floor figures, petrol has shed GH¢0.61 per litre—a 4.2% decline—dropping from GH¢14.53 to GH¢13.92 per litre. LPG followed suit with a modest GH¢0.08 per kilogram reduction, representing a 0.7% dip from GH¢11.06 to GH¢10.98 per kilogram.
However, diesel has bucked the trend, with its price floor climbing GH¢0.22 per litre or 1.5%, rising from GH¢14.97 to GH¢15.19 per litre.
What This Means for Your Wallet
While these adjustments offer a glimmer of relief for petrol users and households relying on LPG, the actual impact at the pump will ultimately depend on how individual Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) price their products. The price floors serve as minimum thresholds—the baseline below which marketers are expected not to sell during this pricing window.
The government's previous intervention in the first August window, which slashed the diesel regulatory margin by GH¢2 per litre for one month, had temporarily softened diesel prices. That subsidy-driven reduction had pulled the diesel floor down from GH¢16.97 to GH¢14.97 per litre.
The Fine Print
Under the Petroleum Product Pricing Guidelines (PPPG), these floors don't factor in premiums from International Oil Trading Companies (IOTCs), operating margins of Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies (BIDECs), or the margins added by marketers and dealers. These additional costs are independently determined by the respective companies.
Who Feels the Pinch?
For transport operators and businesses, the rising diesel floor could keep operational costs elevated—particularly for commercial vehicle fleets, generator-dependent enterprises, and industries that run heavily on diesel-powered equipment.
On a brighter note, the lower petrol floor offers some breathing room for everyday motorists, though the actual savings will depend on how aggressively OMCs choose to pass on these reductions to consumers.
