Ex-Jehovah’s Witness Member Reveals Consequences for Accepting Blood Transfusions

A former member of Jehovah’s Witnesses has shared insight into the serious repercussions faced by adherents who choose to accept blood transfusions, a practice strictly forbidden within the religious organization.

The “Life-or-Death” Card

The woman, known on X (formerly Twitter) as @carrotxbt, revealed that during her time in the faith, she carried a card stating that if she were ever involved in an accident requiring a blood transfusion, she should be allowed to die rather than receive one.

According to her, it is only after leaving the organization that many former members begin to understand the psychological impact of such teachings.

Severe Social Consequences

She explained that any Jehovah’s Witness who accepts a blood transfusion is disfellowshipped, a form of expulsion that results in immediate and complete social isolation.

Members who undergo this disciplinary action are reportedly cut off from their families, friends, and local congregation. In extreme cases, those still living with their parents may be forced out of their homes after surviving the medical incident.

The same consequences, she added, apply to members who marry Christians from other denominations.

Recounting her personal experience, she said:

“I carried a card all my life that stated that in case I had an accident and needed a blood transfusion, I should be left to die. Only when you leave that organization will you realize the level of psychological damage that has been done to you. The person will be disfellowshipped… everyone you used to know will not communicate with you anymore. If you live with your parents prior to the incident, after you survive, you will be thrown out of the house and disowned. The same thing happens if you marry a Christian from another denomination. This religion ruined my family. I had to run away.”

Her comments follow a widely discussed case involving a current member, known online as Aunty Esther, who reportedly refused a blood transfusion while undergoing cancer treatment.
